Understanding Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars at the back of your mouth. Most people get them between the ages of 17 and 25. For some, they emerge without issues. However, for many others, wisdom teeth cause pain, crowding, infection, or damage to nearby teeth—leading to the need for extraction.
- Impaction (tooth fails to fully erupt)
- Infection or gum disease
- Tooth decay in nearby molars
- Cysts or abscesses
- Crowding and alignment issues
If you’re experiencing discomfort, swelling, or jaw pain, it’s essential to seek a professional evaluation.
Wisdom Teeth Removal: What is the Procedure?
Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common oral surgeries we perform at our Dublin clinic. Our dentists first conduct a detailed examination, including x-rays, to determine the best approach.
What is the procedure?
4. Stitching & Recovery: We may place stitches that dissolve within a few days. You’ll be guided on aftercare and pain relief.
The entire process is quick, safe, and carried out with your comfort in mind.
Sedation for Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Many patients feel anxious about dental surgery. At Merrion Square Dental, we understand this and offer various sedation options for wisdom teeth extraction in Dublin.
Types of Sedation:
- Oral sedation: A pill taken before the procedure to help you relax.
- IV sedation: Administered intravenously for a deeper level of relaxation.
- Local anaesthesia only: For patients comfortable without sedation.
Our team will help you choose the option that best suits your comfort level and health profile.
Is There an Alternative to Wisdom Teeth Extraction?
While extraction is often necessary, especially if the tooth is impacted or causing problems, there may be cases where it can be avoided.
Alternatives may include:
- Monitoring: If wisdom teeth aren’t causing pain or crowding, we may simply monitor their growth with regular x-rays.
- Operculectomy: Removal of gum tissue around a partially erupted tooth to prevent infection.
- Orthodontic treatment: Sometimes, realignment can help avoid extraction.
However, if there are signs of infection, decay, or damage to surrounding teeth, wisdom tooth removal is the safest solution.
What to Expect During and After a Tooth Extraction?
At Merrion Square Dental, we guide you through every step, from pre-op to recovery. Knowing what to expect helps ease anxiety and prepare for a smooth healing process.
During the Extraction:
- You’ll be under local anaesthetic or sedation.
- The procedure typically lasts 20–40 minutes.
- You may feel pressure but no pain.
After the Extraction:
- Swelling and discomfort are normal for a few days.
- We’ll provide aftercare instructions including pain relief, oral hygiene, and dietary tips.
- Avoid smoking, alcohol, and strenuous activity for 48 hours.
- Healing usually takes 7–10 days, with follow-up if needed.
We’re always just a phone call away in case you have concerns or questions during recovery.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin
My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry.
Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
