Whether you’re experiencing intermittent pain, or your discomfort has come on suddenly, our expert dental team will do everything possible to put a smile back on your face.
What Causes Tooth Pain?
Tooth pain can occur for several different reasons, and the type of pain varies. Some people experience a sudden onset of throbbing pain, while others have pain that comes and goes. The most common causes of tooth pain include:
- Dental infections and abscesses
- Tooth decay and cavities
- Gum recession
- Chipped and broken teeth
- Loose or damaged fillings
- Trauma and injuries that affect the jaw joint or the teeth directly
If you have wisdom teeth that are pushing through, you may also find that you experience toothache. This usually occurs when there is a lack of space in the jaw for the third molars, which causes the tooth to push up against the neighbouring tooth and grow at an angle. This is known as an impacted wisdom tooth.
In some cases, toothache can also be a side-effect of sinus inflammation.
When To Seek Emergency Help For Tooth Pain in Dublin
The most important thing to do when you have tooth pain is to seek help from your dentist. When you have a dental appointment, your dentist will make identifying the cause of pain a priority. Using visual examinations and X-rays, your dentist will determine the cause, and then discuss treatment options with you.
Treatment options for tooth pain in Dublin include:
If pain is linked to a cavity or more widespread decay, decayed tissue will be removed from the tooth and then the tooth will be filled to prevent the spread of infection and reduce the risk of damage.
If a tooth is chipped, it is often possible to restore it using a technique known as composite bonding. This involves placing a small amount of dental composite, a tooth-coloured material, to the tooth to reshape and strengthen it. If the tooth is cracked, the best option may be to fit a new crown. Crowns are also known as caps, as they are placed over the top of the existing tooth structure.
If a filling is loose or damaged, your dentist will remove the remnants and then place a new filling.
If the tooth is infected, and the infection has reached the pulp tissue, the living part of the tooth, antibiotics may be recommended. It may also be advisable to carry out root canal treatment, which involves removing decayed pulp tissue from the root canals and then cleaning and sealing the tooth. A new crown may also be placed.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin
My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry.
Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
