MERCURY-FREE DENTISTRY DUBLIN
When it comes to your oral health, every detail matters – especially the materials used in your dental treatments. If you’re concerned about traditional silver fillings or wondering about safer alternatives, mercury-free dentistry in Dublin may be the right choice for you. At Merrion Square Dental, we’re proud to offer advanced, mercury-free solutions that support your health, smile, and peace of mind.
What Does Mercury-Free Dentistry Mean?
Mercury-free dentistry refers to the use of dental materials that do not contain mercury, particularly in dental fillings. For decades, dentists commonly used amalgam fillings, a mixture of metals including silver, tin, copper, and about 50% mercury. While amalgam is durable and cost-effective, concerns have been raised about the potential health and environmental risks associated with mercury exposure.
Choosing mercury-free dentistry means opting for modern alternatives – typically composite resins, ceramic, or glass ionomer fillings – that are safe, effective, and aesthetically pleasing.
Why Are People Switching to Mercury-Free Dentistry?
1. Health Consciousness
Mercury is a known neurotoxin. Though the amount in amalgam fillings is considered low, many patients prefer to avoid any potential exposure, particularly if they have underlying health issues, allergies, or sensitivities.
2. Aesthetic Appeal
Mercury-free fillings are tooth-coloured and blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, unlike silver amalgam fillings which are highly visible. This makes them especially popular for front teeth or visible areas.
3. Eco-Friendly Dentistry
Dental amalgam waste can enter the environment through wastewater and improper disposal. Mercury-free practices reduce this impact and support more sustainable, environmentally conscious dentistry.
Mercury-Free Fillings: What Are the Alternatives?
If you’re considering mercury-free fillings in Dublin, you’ll be pleased to know that modern materials have come a long way in terms of durability, functionality, and appearance.
Composite Fillings
- Made from a blend of plastic resin and fine glass particles
- Bond directly to the tooth, preserving more of your natural tooth structure
- Suitable for both front and back teeth
- Long-lasting with proper oral care
Ceramic Fillings
- Extremely durable and resistant to staining
- Often used for inlays, onlays, or crowns
- Ideal for larger cavities or damaged teeth
- Mimic the natural sheen and translucency of enamel
Glass Ionomer Fillings
- Release fluoride, which helps protect against further decay
- Best for non-load-bearing areas or children’s teeth
- Slightly less durable than composites or ceramics but useful in specific situations
Replacing Amalgam Fillings: Is It Worth It?
You may be wondering if you should replace your existing amalgam fillings. While old fillings don’t always need to be removed unless they’re damaged or causing problems, many patients choose replacement for health, cosmetic, or personal reasons.
When Should You Consider Replacing Amalgam Fillings?
- Your filling is cracked, worn, or leaking.
- You experience tooth sensitivity or discomfort.
- You want a more natural-looking smile
- You have concerns about mercury exposure.
- You’re experiencing unexplained health symptoms and want to rule out possible causes.
At Merrion Square Dental, we take a cautious and patient-focused approach to amalgam removal. We follow strict safety protocols to ensure minimal exposure during the process and will only recommend replacement if it truly benefits your oral and overall health.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin
My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry.
Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
