Lost Tooth DUBLIN

What To Do When a Tooth Falls Out

Losing a tooth unexpectedly can be a distressing experience, whether due to an accident, sports injury, or gum disease. Acting quickly and correctly can significantly improve your chances of saving the tooth or successfully replacing it. At Merrion Square Dental in Dublin, we’re here to guide you through every step of emergency tooth loss and offer reliable, same-day solutions.

What Should You Do If You Lose a Tooth?

If You Still Have The Missing Tooth

If you’re able to retrieve the tooth that’s been knocked out (also known as an avulsed tooth), the first few minutes are critical. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Handle the Tooth Properly: Hold it by the crown (the part that’s visible in the mouth), not the root. Touching the root can damage essential fibres needed for reinsertion.
  2. Clean It Gently:  Rinse the tooth very gently under cold water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrub, use soap, or dry it with a cloth or tissue.
  3. Try to Reinsert the Tooth: If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and gently bite down on a clean cloth or gauze to keep it in place.
  4. If Replanting Isn’t Possible: Keep the tooth moist in a container of milk or saliva (place it inside your cheek) until you reach the dentist. Do not store it in water.
  5. See an Emergency Dentist Immediately: Time is crucial—ideally, see a dentist within 30 to 60 minutes of the injury. At Merrion Square Dental in Dublin, we provide emergency dental care 7 days a week.

If The Tooth is Lost Completely

Sometimes, the tooth is damaged beyond recovery or can’t be located after the accident. In these cases, don’t panic modern dentistry offers several excellent tooth replacement options. At Merrion Square Dental in Dublin, we’ll assess the situation and help restore your smile with:

1. Dental Implants

A permanent, natural-looking solution. Implants act as artificial tooth roots and are topped with lifelike crowns for full function and aesthetics.

2. Dental Bridges

Bridges use adjacent healthy teeth as anchors to support a false tooth in the gap. They’re an effective and cost-efficient option if implants aren’t suitable.

3. Dentures

If multiple teeth are missing, partial or full dentures may be the best solution. Today’s dentures are lightweight, custom-fitted, and far more comfortable than older versions.

Common Causes of Tooth Loss

Understanding the causes can help you prevent future incidents. Some of the most common include:

Trauma or Injury: Falls, sports injuries, or vehicle accidents

Tooth Decay: Severe cavities can weaken a tooth to the point of loss

Gum Disease: Advanced periodontal disease loosens the tooth’s hold

Failed Dental Work: Previously treated teeth may weaken over time

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding): Can cause tooth fractures over time

At Merrion Square Dental in Dublin, we offer preventive dental care and custom mouthguards to protect against injury or damage.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin

My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry. Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
