ENDODONTICS - ROOT CANAL TREATMENT DUBLIN
What Is Endodontics?
Endodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry focused on the diagnosis and treatment of issues related to the dental pulp—the soft tissue inside your teeth. One of the most common procedures in endodontics is Root Canal Treatment, a technique used to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted due to infection or trauma.
If you’re experiencing persistent toothache, swelling, or sensitivity, you may need root canal therapy. At Merrion Square Dental, we offer advanced Endodontics – Root Canal Treatment in Dublin, delivered with compassion and expertise.
When Is Root Canal Treatment Needed?
Root canal treatment becomes necessary when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected, inflamed, or damaged. This can occur due to:
- Deep decay (cavities)
- Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Trauma to the tooth (even if there is no visible damage)
If left untreated, the infection can spread, causing abscesses and even bone loss. The earlier you address the issue, the better the outcome for your oral health.
Signs You Might Need a Root Canal
- Persistent tooth pain, especially when chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
- Swollen or tender gums
- Darkening of the tooth
- Pimples or abscesses on the gums
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an assessment. Our dental team in Dublin will carry out a thorough evaluation to determine whether root canal treatment is right for you.
Root Canal Treatment Dublin: Step-by-Step
At Merrion Square Dental, we use state-of-the-art technology to make your root canal treatment as efficient and comfortable as possible.
1. Diagnosis and Imaging
We start by taking digital X-rays to determine the extent of the infection or damage.
2. Anaesthesia
We ensure the treatment area is completely numb. Most patients compare the procedure to having a regular filling.
3. Removal of Infected Pulp
A small opening is made in the tooth to access and remove the damaged pulp.
4. Cleaning and Disinfection
The root canals are meticulously cleaned and disinfected to eliminate all bacteria.
5. Filling the Canals
Once clean, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material (usually gutta-percha) to prevent reinfection.
6. Sealing and Restoration
The tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. A dental crown may be placed later for added strength and protection.
Is a Root Canal Treatment Painful?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear. The truth is, modern root canal treatments are no more uncomfortable than getting a standard filling. With local anaesthesia and advanced techniques, the procedure is virtually pain-free.
Most patients report relief from pain immediately after treatment, rather than experiencing more discomfort.
Is There an Alternative to Root Canal Treatment?
The only real alternative to a root canal is tooth extraction, followed by a dental implant, bridge, or denture. While these are viable options, keeping your natural tooth is almost always the best choice for your oral health and function.
Root canal therapy allows you to preserve your natural bite, avoid shifting of other teeth, and maintain your smile—without the need for replacement.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin
My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry.
Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
