Dental Sedation Dublin
Do you feel anxious at the thought of visiting the dentist? You’re not alone. At Merrion Square Dental, we understand that dental anxiety is a real and serious concern for many people. That’s why we offer Dental Sedation in Dublin — a safe, effective way to make your dental treatment more comfortable and stress-free.
What is Dental Sedation?
Dental sedation refers to the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s often recommended for those who experience dental anxiety, have a low pain threshold, suffer from a sensitive gag reflex, or require complex and lengthy dental treatments.
There are different levels of dental sedation:
- Minimal sedation – You’re awake but relaxed.
- Moderate sedation (conscious sedation) – You may slur your words and not remember much of the procedure.
- Deep sedation – You’re on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.
- General anaesthesia – You’re completely unconscious.
At Merrion Square Dental, we primarily offer conscious sedation, which allows you to remain responsive and breathe independently while enjoying a heightened sense of calm throughout your procedure.
Who Can Benefit from Dental Sedation?
Dental sedation is suitable for a wide range of patients. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Experience dental anxiety or fear
- Have had previous traumatic dental experiences
- Require multiple or lengthy procedures
- Have difficulty getting numb with local anaesthesia
- Suffer from a strong gag reflex
- Have a medical condition such as Parkinson’s or cerebral palsy that makes it hard to sit still
Our dentists will perform a thorough assessment to ensure that sedation is safe and appropriate for you.
Types of Dental Sedation We Offer
There are several different types of dental sedation, including:
- Intravenous (IV) sedation;
- Oral sedation;
- Inhalation sedation.
Benefits of Dental Sedation
Dental sedation offers several important benefits that improve the overall experience of visiting the dentist:
- Reduces Anxiety and Fear: If dental visits make you nervous, sedation allows you to undergo treatment without stress or panic.
- Enhances Comfort: Sedation reduces discomfort, especially during longer or more invasive procedures like tooth extractions or root canal treatments.
- Fewer Appointments: Since sedation allows us to carry out more work in a single session, you may need fewer visits to complete your treatment plan.
- Improves Cooperation: Patients with special needs or those who struggle to remain still can benefit from sedation, helping procedures go more smoothly.
- Minimises Gag Reflex: For patients with a sensitive gag reflex, sedation helps reduce discomfort and allows the dentist to work more effectively.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin
My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry.
Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
