You are probably suffering from a dental abscess if you’re experiencing the following symptoms:
What is a Dental Abscess?
A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. It can form inside the tooth (periapical abscess), in the gums (periodontal abscess), or between the gum and the tooth (gingival abscess). This condition is not only extremely painful—it can also lead to serious health issues if left untreated.
Common Symptoms of a Dental Abscess:
- Severe, throbbing toothache
- Swelling in your face, jaw, or cheek
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- A foul taste in your mouth
- Fever or swollen lymph nodes
- Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing
If you notice any of these signs, contact us immediately for dental abscess treatment in Dublin.
What Causes a Dental Abscess?
- Untreated tooth decay
- Gum disease (periodontitis)
- A cracked or broken tooth
- Failed dental work or trauma
- Poor oral hygiene
When bacteria reach the pulp (nerve tissue) inside the tooth or deep gum pockets, infection sets in. Your body’s immune response creates pus to fight the infection, causing pressure and pain.
Why Prompt Treatment is Essential
Without timely care, a dental abscess can spread to your jaw, sinuses, or even bloodstream, leading to life-threatening complications like sepsis. That’s why our clinic prioritises same-day treatment for dental abscesses in Dublin.
Delaying care can result in:
- Tooth loss
- Bone damage
- Spread of infection to other body parts
- Increased treatment complexity and cost

How We Treat Dental Abscesses in Dublin
Our highly experienced dentists will first diagnose the type and extent of your abscess using clinical examination and X-rays. Based on the severity, we may recommend one or more of the following:
1. Root Canal Treatment for Dental Abscess
If the infection is inside the tooth, a root canal can clean and disinfect the area, remove the infected pulp, and save the tooth from extraction. A filling or crown is placed afterward to protect it.
2. Tooth Extraction
If the tooth is too damaged to save, tooth extraction may be the best option. This removes the source of infection and prevents it from spreading.
3. Abscess Drainage
In cases of severe swelling, we may perform drainage by making a small incision to release pus, reducing pressure and pain quickly.
4. Antibiotics and Pain Relief
We may prescribe antibiotics if the infection has spread or if drainage isn’t possible right away. Pain relief medications are also provided to manage discomfort during recovery.
5. Gum Surgery (For Periodontal Abscesses)
If the abscess is caused by gum disease, periodontal treatment or surgery may be required to clean out infected tissue and prevent recurrence.
Aftercare and Recovery
After treatment, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene and follow your dentist’s instructions. We’ll guide you through the recovery process with:
- Tailored oral care tips
- Follow-up appointments if needed
- Preventive advice to avoid future abscesses
How to Prevent Dental Abscesses
Preventive care is the key to long-term oral health. Here are simple but effective steps:
- Brush and floss daily
- Avoid sugary snacks and drinks
- Attend regular dental checkups (at least twice a year)
- Treat cavities and gum disease early
- Don’t ignore tooth pain or signs of infection
Drainage
Performed by one of our dentists or specialists, highly-specialised in delivering emergency dental treatments, drainage of your dental abscess may be the quickest way to relieve the pain and remove the collected pus. Typically followed by other therapies, draining involves a minimal incision in the gum.
Sedation is always used during this procedure to ensure there’s no sensitivity in the area, and an antiseptic mouth wash is typically required to help cure the infection.

Letters from our patients in Dublin
My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry.
Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
