What Causes a Chipped Tooth?

A chipped tooth occurs when a portion of the tooth enamel breaks off. This can range from a minor cosmetic concern to a serious dental issue if left untreated. Common causes include:

Treatment Options for a Chipped Tooth

The best treatment depends on the severity and location of the chip. Here are the most effective solutions we offer at our Dublin clinic:

1. Dental Bonding for a Chipped Tooth

For small chips or front teeth, dental bonding is a quick and cost-effective solution.

What it involves: A tooth-coloured resin is applied, shaped, and hardened using a special light.

Benefits: Painless, affordable, same-day solution

Durability: Lasts 3–10 years with proper care

This is a popular option for cosmetic repairs and is especially suitable for minor enamel chips.

If you’re looking for a more durable and aesthetic solution, a composite veneer may be ideal.

What it involves: A thin layer of composite material is bonded to the front of the tooth to improve shape and appearance.

Benefits: More stain-resistant and natural-looking than bonding

Durability: Typically lasts 5–7 years

Composite veneers work well for larger chips on front teeth and also improve the overall appearance of your smile.

When a tooth is severely chipped or structurally compromised, a dental crown is often the best option.

What it involves: A custom-made cap is placed over the entire tooth to restore strength and function.

Benefits: Strong, long-lasting, protects against further damage

Durability: 10–15 years or longer

Crowns are commonly used for molars or teeth that endure high pressure from chewing.

What to Do If You Chip a Tooth

Here’s what you should do immediately after chipping a tooth:

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm water to keep it clean.

  2. Apply pressure with gauze if there is any bleeding.

  3. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

  4. Save the broken piece (if available) and bring it to your appointment.

Preventing Chipped Teeth

While accidents are unavoidable, you can reduce your risk of chipped teeth by:

  1. Avoiding hard foods and ice
  2. Wearing a mouthguard during sports
  3. Treating bruxism with a night guard
  4. Maintaining strong teeth with regular dental check-ups

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin

My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry. Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
