Emergency Treatment of a Broken Tooth in Dublin
What to Do Immediately After Breaking a Tooth
If you’ve just broken a tooth, it’s crucial to act quickly. Here’s what you should do before getting to the dentist:
- Severe, throbbing toothache
- Swelling in your face, jaw, or cheek
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- A foul taste in your mouth
- Fever or swollen lymph nodes
- Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing
At Merrion Square Dental, we provide emergency treatment of a broken tooth every day of the week. Whether it’s a weekend or late evening, our Dublin clinic is ready to help you restore your oral health and ease your discomfort.
How Are Broken Teeth Treated?
A Personalised Approach to Tooth Repair
The treatment of a broken tooth depends on the extent of the damage. At our Dublin practice, we begin with a detailed examination, including X-rays if necessary, to assess the severity. From minor chips to severe fractures, we offer a full spectrum of restorative and cosmetic solutions, including:
- Dental Bonding
- Dental Veneers
- Dental Crowns
- Root Canal Therapy (if the pulp is exposed or infected)
- Tooth Extraction (only when the damage is beyond repair)
Dental Bonding for a Broken Tooth
Dental bonding is an ideal solution for small chips and cracks. This quick, non-invasive procedure uses a tooth-coloured composite resin to rebuild and restore the shape of the damaged tooth.
Key Benefits of Dental Bonding:
- Usually completed in one visit
- Affordable cosmetic solution
- Natural-looking results
- No need for enamel removal
Bonding is especially effective for minor aesthetic breaks in front teeth, restoring your smile discreetly and comfortably.
When is a Crown or Root Canal Needed?
If the break is more extensive—affecting a large portion of the tooth or reaching the nerve—you may require a dental crown to restore full function. In cases where the nerve is exposed or infected, root canal treatment may be necessary before placing a crown.
At Merrion Square Dental, we offer same-day crown options and expert endodontic care, ensuring your tooth is saved whenever possible.
Common Causes of Broken Teeth
Understanding why teeth break can help you prevent future issues:
- Biting hard foods (nuts, ice, hard sweets)
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Trauma or injury (sports, accidents)
- Old or failing dental work
- Tooth decay and weakened enamel
We also offer night guards and preventive advice to help patients at risk of future tooth fractures.
Dental Veneers for a Broken Tooth
For more visible or cosmetic concerns—especially on front teeth—dental veneers offer a long-lasting and highly aesthetic fix. Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells that are bonded to the front of the affected teeth.
Why Choose Veneers?
- Perfect for larger breaks or uneven edges
- Durable and stain-resistant
- Provide a flawless appearance
- Minimal enamel removal required
Veneers are popular among patients who not only want to repair a broken tooth but also enhance the overall appearance of their smile.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin
My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry.
Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
