Apicectomy Dublin

If you’ve undergone a root canal treatment but are still experiencing persistent pain or infection, you may need an apicectomy – a minor surgical procedure that targets the root tip of the tooth. At Merrion Square Dental in Dublin, we offer gentle, effective apicectomy treatments using modern techniques and a patient-first approach.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about apicectomy, including what to expect, how it helps preserve your natural tooth, and why we are one of Dublin’s trusted clinics for advanced dental care.

What is an Apicectomy?

An apicectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a dental procedure that removes the tip (apex) of a tooth’s root. It’s usually performed when an infection persists in the bone surrounding a tooth that has already had a root canal.

Unlike root canal retreatment, which involves re-entering the tooth from the top, an apicectomy accesses the infected tissue from the gum side, removing only the root tip and sealing the canal from the bottom.

Why Might You Need an Apicectomy?

There are several reasons why an apicectomy might be necessary:

  • Persistent infection or inflammation after a root canal

  • Blocked or curved canals that cannot be retreated through the crown

  • Fractured root tips

  • Cysts or bone lesions near the root

  • Hidden canals not visible in X-rays or missed during the initial root canal

The goal of the procedure is to remove infection, preserve your natural tooth, and avoid extraction.

What to Expect During Apicectomy?

At Merrion Square Dental, we prioritise your comfort and make sure you’re fully informed before, during, and after the procedure. Here’s a step-by-step overview of what to expect during apicectomy treatment in our Dublin clinic:

1. Consultation and Imaging

Your dentist will begin with a thorough consultation, review your symptoms, and take digital X-rays or a 3D scan to assess the affected tooth and surrounding bone.

2. Local Anaesthetic

To ensure a pain-free experience, a local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area.

3. Surgical Access

A small incision is made in the gum near the affected tooth to expose the root tip and surrounding infected tissue.

4. Root Tip Removal

The dentist removes the root tip (about 1–3mm) along with any infected or inflamed tissue in the bone.

5. Root-End Filling

The end of the root canal is carefully cleaned and sealed using a biocompatible filling material to prevent further infection.

6. Stitches and Healing

The gum is sutured (stitched) back into place, and healing begins. You’ll be given clear post-operative instructions to support a smooth recovery.

Aftercare and Recovery

Most patients recover comfortably within a few days. Here are some helpful post- apicectomy care tips:

  • Use cold packs to reduce swelling in the first 24 hours
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as advised
  • Stick to soft foods for the first couple of days
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing or brushing around the surgical site
  • Attend your follow-up appointment for stitch removal and review
If you notice excessive bleeding, swelling, or discomfort, contact our clinic immediately for support.

Benefits of an Apicectomy

Choosing an apicectomy over tooth extraction can provide significant long-term benefits:

  • Preserves your natural tooth
  • Eliminates infection at the root tip
  • Minimally invasive and targeted
  • High success rate with proper aftercare
  • Avoids the need for implants or bridges
For patients in Dublin looking to save a previously treated tooth, an apicectomy offers a reliable and effective solution.

Is Apicectomy Painful?

Thanks to modern dental techniques and local anaesthesia, apicectomy is not a painful procedure. You may feel slight pressure during the treatment, but it should not be uncomfortable. Mild soreness after surgery is common and typically resolves within a few days.

At Merrion Square Dental, we are dedicated to ensuring a calm, reassuring experience – especially for nervous or anxious patients.

Who Performs the Procedure?

Apicectomy procedures at Merrion Square Dental are carried out by experienced dentists and endodontists who specialise in root canal and surgical treatments. With advanced diagnostic tools, precise techniques, and a gentle touch, you’re in safe hands.

How Much Does Apicectomy Cost in Dublin?

The cost of apicectomy can vary based on the complexity of the case and the tooth involved (front teeth are often simpler to access than molars). At Merrion Square Dental, we provide transparent pricing and payment plans. A personalised quote will be given during your consultation.

Letters From Our Patients in Dublin

My wife & I were patients of Barry & Geraldine at this practice for many years & we were concerned that they had decided to retire (despite the fact that we are retired ourselves). Having said that, we were delighted to discover that they left us literally in the very capable hands of Patrick & without exception all of his wonderful team. We cannot praise them enough for the highly professional, confident & caring approach to dentistry. Good luck with your new practice Patrick & see you soon. Gerry & Ailish

I recently had two separate treatments in Merrion Square Dental. First was a very tricky filling in a back tooth which was causing pain, this was completed with excellent results. Following that, I had crown work done on a few teeth that were no longer looking too good, and I am absolutely delighted with the results which are completely natural and discreet looking. I was very well taken care of from start to finish, which included follow on after care appointments. I would highly recommend Patrick and the team for their care and professionalism

Left a message looking for an appointment for a tooth extraction but wasn't expecting to get seen to as quickly as I did! Paddy rang and gave me an appointment for 6.45pm that evening. He examined the tooth and suggested because of the symptoms it might be a filling was too high and grinding of the teeth was causing the pain. He said he could file and polish the tooth and see would that improve the matter before having to remove it. I was happy to agree and he worked away, making sure I was comfortable while he was doing so. He told me to contact the surgery if the pain didn't go away and the receptionist said she would ring me on Friday to check how it was. All good so far, fingers crossed! Great service!
